Born and raised in the Dirty South, Courtney began practicing Astanga Yoga while living in Australia and continued during her time in Europe, where she completed her first 200hr teacher training. She has since continued her yoga education in the Chromatic Yoga style with Matt Giordano. Believing in Biggie’s lyrics that “the sky is the limit”, she moved to Aspen in 2007 where she created and trademarked the Thug Yoga® style for shredder homies who didn’t vibe with traditional classes. By integrating hip hop history with yogic principles and philosophy, she teaches balance and mindfulness in all things so that “no matter how hard it gets…stick your chest out, keep your head up and handle it,” as Tupac sang. Off the mat, she snowboards 100+ days per year, explores the world and loves tequila almost as much as rap music.
Masterclass: Thug Yoga
Putting the “OG” in “yoga” since 2008, this class was created and trademarked by Aspen’s own Courtney Smith, and is designed for the G who doesn't follow the crowd. Laugh with your homies as you breathe, move and open the body in an all-levels mindful flow. Hilarious pose names and hip hop beats curated to the particular sequence make this "Gateway Yoga” the only option for beginners wanting to dip into the yoga sauce, as well as those looking to spice up their practice. Learn the basics as well as some badass moves for the dance floor. Originally designed for the mountain athlete in mind, a little Hair of the Downward Dogg is always welcome. Namashred.
